Kappa Xi Chapter
University of Nevada, Las Vegas
A Study of Local Chapter History
The Kappa Xi Chapter is known as a beacon of service in the Las Vegas and entire Southern Nevada community. Seated in the Far Western Region at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas since April 15, 1976, this Chapter has been working to make a notable difference and better their community since day one. Twelve young women came together to form the interest group T.I.A.K.A.- Those Interested in Alpha Kappa Alpha. Yvonne Atkinson, Patricia Bailey, Vicki Barnett, Debbie Epps, Swayzine Nevada Fields, Shirley Harper, Wanette Hewlett, Rosherral Hunt, Waynetta James, Monica Lopes, Vicki Turner and Deborah Wicker came together to become the 12 Charter members of the Kappa Xi Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated.
Supervised by the Sorors of the Theta Theta Omega Graduate Chapter, Soror Jennie Crawford (Ivy Beyond the Wall) and Soror Barbara Kirkland stepped up as the first Graduate Advisors of the Chapter. These twelve women were welcomed into this illustrious sorority by the 14th Far Western Regional Director, Soror Mildred Robinson (Ivy Beyond the Wall) and then Theta Theta Omega Chapter Basileus, Soror Willa Bywaters (Ivy Beyond the Wall).
After the luncheon was concluded at a Denny’s restaurant earlier that glorious day, Soror Mildred Robinson served as the keynote speaker at the closing chartering ceremony banquet held at the Silver Nugget. The newly initiated members of the Kappa Xi Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha performed original poetry, creative dances and sorority songs.
Jumping right into the work of Alpha Kappa Alpha, Charter members were installed by Soror Margaret Crawford and assumed the following positions immediately after their initiation: Deborah Wicker, President; Swayzine Nevada Fields, Vice President; Vicki Turner, Secretary; Rosherral Hunt, Treasurer; Monica Lopes, Philacter; Yvonne Atkinson, Ivy Leaf Reporter; Patricia Bailey, Parliamentarian; Vicki Barnett, Historian; Debbie Epps, Epistoleus; Shirley Harper, Hodegos; Wanette Hewlett and Waynetta James, Dean of Pledges.
